Well, if your high school is a typical one, then there are going to be a bunch of people doing the legalizing marijuana topic. You want something that’s unusual but not so rare that you can’t find sources for it. Also, a lot of people will probably write about gay marriage–it’s a hot topic nowadays.
I would say write about the media and its responsibilities. There’s a whole lot to be said there; you can talk about bias in news coverage (Fox News is way biased towards the Republicans and MSNBC is way biased towards the Democrats), how watching violent TV/movies makes children more likely to be involved in violence later in life, how seeing images of stick thin women can lead young girls into hating their bodies, how advertising on children’s TV shows creates pressure on parents to buy their kids so much stuff… the list goes on and on!
